Annapurna Base Camp trekking is more easily accessible than the Everest Region Trekking but is equally diverse if not more. The journey through Gurung villages and colorful rhododendron vegetation is a memory you won’t forget for the rest of your life.

Moreover, you will shake hands with Mt. Machhapuchhre from close. In fact, the trail to Annapurna Base Camp goes through Machhappuchhre Base Camp.

The highlight of this entire trek is the sunrise view from Annapurna Base Camp. Witnessing the golden rays of the sun kiss the snow-capped mountains that surround you from all sides is a bizarre, satisfying, and emotional moment.

Highlights of the Trek:

  • Chance to explore and understand the unique Gurung culture and values from close.
  • Sunrise from Poon Hill with numerous major peaks insight.
  • The trail goes through colorful Rhododendron and Magnolia vegetation.
  • Chance to trek to Machhapuchhre Base Camp along with the main destination–the Annapurna Base Camp.

Tour Plan

1

Welcome to Kathmandu

You will get your visa on arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu. You will need a passport and a couple of photographs to get the visa issued. The visa term can be extended later if you wish. The available choices are 15 days, 30 days, and 90 days. Our representative will receive you at the airport carrying a Mercy Holidays placard and our brand t-shirt. A brief orientation meeting will be organized in the evening. The night will be spent at a hotel in Kathmandu.
2

Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing

Early morning after breakfast, we will visit two of the popular and religiously important sites of Kathmandu: Pashupatinath and Bouddhanath. Built during the fifth century, the devotees of Lord Shiva hold Pashupatinath as a sacred site. This is also a cremation site for the Hindus. Only Hindus are allowed through the gates of the main temple. Nevertheless, the purity of the aura that surrounds this temple is equally serene and permitted to visitors. Bouddhanath, on the other hand, is the center of Buddhism in Nepal. Since we are going here in the morning, we will get a chance to witness the morning kora of Tibetan pilgrims. Bouddhanath buzzes with tranquil energy. If you haven’t, you can buy trekking gear and other essentials after lunch. We will have a casual day today, only to prepare mentally for the adventure that lies ahead.
3

Drive to Pokhara (approx. Drive 5-6 hours)

An energizing breakfast in the morning should prepare you for the almost-6-hours long bus journey to Pokhara. Try to sit on the right side if possible--the view of the gorging Trishuli river on the Prithvi highway is amazing. We will reach Pokhara at about 3 pm. (Explore Pokhara, describe a bit about Pokhara)
4

Drive to Nayapul and trek to Tikhedhunga

2.5 hours drive Jeep or a taxi depending on group size. Note: Either take a vehicle directly to Ulleri and start the trek from there. This reduces the hiking time but altitude problems. We will only take a vehicle to Nayapul. Our hike then starts from there. Lunch will be taken in Birethati. Birethati is a major entrance to numerous trekking trails of the Annapurna region. It is also a confluence of two rivers: Burundi and Modi Khola. After lunch, we will take the trail with the Bhurungi river on our left. This is a pleasant trek through settlements of different ethnic groups. The trail crosses through beautiful terraced farmlands. A gradual trek for about 3.5 hours will bring us to Tikhedhunga. Birethati - Sudame - Hile - Tikhedhunga (Map) Overnight.
5

Trek to Ghorepani (approx walk 3 hours)

Some parts of today might be slightly tough for beginner trekkers or amateurs. After only about 10 minutes of starting the journey, we will cross a short suspension bridge that runs above a minor stream, after which another suspension bridge immediately follows. The trek after crossing the second bridge is a steeper climb of about 2.5 hours, which will get easier after we reach Ulleri. The entire trail goes through plentiful vegetation and a spare settlement, thus you are rejuvenated while still doing the steep climb. After about 45 minutes of gentler climb, we will reach Banthati. Our trail then goes through a dense forest of Rhododendron and a sparse distribution of Magnolia. If you come in spring (March, April), you will be taken aback by the multi-colored Rhododendron flowers that beautify the entire forest. You will cross minor streams and pass through blissful vegetation to reach Nangethati. A similar trail leads us to Ghorepani about 1.5 hours from Nangethati. Ghorepani is a junction point for trekkers in the Annapurna Region. Trekkers coming from Nayapul, Ghandruk, Khopra trekking, and Annapurna Circuit all meet at this bustling bazaar. The name Ghorepani translates to (Horse Water) in English. This was because traders in the old days fed water to their horses while coming from Tibet (trans-Himalayan border) after a long journey of trading. Nevertheless, this place has only evolved with time. It is now a close-knit and colorful site with a lot of shops that sell handicrafts and souvenirs. Overnight at Ghorepani.

Trek to Tadapani (approx walks 5 hours)

We will start at dusk to see the sunrise from Poon Hill. Since it is still dark, we will use head torches. After about 45 minutes of an uphill climb, we will have a short water break near a telecommunications tower. Our trek then continues uphill for 25 more minutes till we reach the hill station of Poon Hill. Poon Hill is a spectacular viewpoint. The highest place also has an artificial viewpoint tower built by a local from the Poon ethnicity, hence the given name. The scenery visible in sight is of the Dhaulagiri range and the Annapurna Range. (Dhaulagiri I, II, III, IV, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, Lamjung Himal, and Tukche, among other peaks. We will spend a big chunk of our time observing the view and clicking quite a lot of pictures. There is only one tea and coffee vendor in this area. Thus, you might want to return after a million pictures down to Ghorepani for breakfast. After breakfast, the trek to Deurali takes about the same time from Ghodepani that it took us to reach Poonhill this morning. Since Deurali and Poon Hill (where we went this morning) are at similar altitudes, the views are also comparable. We will go through beautiful Rhododendron and Hemlock vegetation to finally reach Banthati. This Ban Thati is a different place from the Banthati we passed on Day 5. Lunch will be taken in Ban Thati. After lunch, we will go from one hill to another. This required us to descend down to a stream passing in between these hills and climb another hill to reach Tadapani. Tadapani is a very small settlement with only 5 to 7 hotels in the middle of a large jungle. The name translates to far water in English because this place used to be far from any water source. Overnight.
7

Trek to Chomrong (walk approx 5-6 hours)

Tadapani is a meeting point of the trails that lead to Ghandruk, Khopra Dada, and Annapurna Base Camp respectively. We will take the trail to Annapurna Base Camp which is a descent for about 2 hours till we reach Kimrong Khola (River). Then, we will pass several suspension bridges through sparse farmlands to reach Chomrong Village. Chomrong village is a major village of the Gurung community, well-known Gurkhas known for bravery and loyalty. This is a permanent settlement in the Annapurna Conservation Area. There are a limited number of guesthouses from this place up to Annapurna Base Camp to prevent overbuilding of artificial lodges. Thus, it is difficult to get a single (and even a couple) room from above this point. Expect to share your room with 3 or four fellow trekkers. Overnight.
8

Trek to Dovan (walk approx 5-6 hours)

You will wake up to see spectacular the Annapurna massif and Mt. Fishtail to your north and northeast. A warm breakfast should prepare you for the day. You will descend to cross a stream via a suspension bridge. After crossing the bridge, we will take an uphill trek to reach Sinuwa. It takes about 4 hours to reach Sinuwa from our lodge at Chomrong. You can opt for a tea and snacks break at this point because there is no settlement or shops on the way to Bamboo. We will take an undulating trek of 2.5 hours from inside a forest to reach Bamboo. Thus, it is likely that we might see some wild animals like Langoor, wild birds, and deer on the journey. Our trek resumes after lunch in Bamboo. We will follow Modi Khola to reach Dovan. Overnight.
9

Trek to Machapucharae Base Camp (approx walk 6-7 hours)

We will trek upwards with Machhapuchhre Base Camp as a destination. After we cross Pujinim Barah temple, we enter the buffer zone. Smuggling meat inside the buffer zone is forbidden. Shortly before we reach Hinku cave, you will witness a few photogenic waterfalls on the right. Hinku cave was previously used as a camp by expedition mountaineers. After a short hike of 45 minutes from Hinku cave, we will reach Deurali where we stop for lunch. The area between Hinku cave and Deurali is avalanche prone. The treeline ends from Deurali and we will walk at a slower pace from here because of the increasing altitude. Also, remember to hydrate more often. This challenging journey will finally bring us to Machhapuchhre Base Camp. Unlike the Everest Base Camp, the Machhapuchhre Base is a hospitable place with a few hotels. The hotels are built on top of a cliff. The towering Machhapuchhre is on the South-East. It is said that Machhapuchhre is to Annapurna Base Camp as Amadablam is to the Everest Region: both look incredibly beautiful from up close. The base camp is a pretty enclosed place shadowed by white peaks and rocky mountains from all sides. Although base camps are expedition preparation areas of the respective mountains, you cannot get a permit to climb Mt. Machhapuchhre since it is considered a holy mountain.
10

Trek to Annapurna Base Camp (approx. walk 3 hours)

We will head off to Annapurna Base Camp in the morning at about 8 am. Since there are no human settlements in between the two base camps, we will trek continuously for about 3 to 4 hours. The trail is pretty straightforward to the base camp. We will reach Annapurna Base Camp at lunchtime. You will witness a 360 degrees view of numerous mountain peaks like Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Himchuli, Annapurna Fang, Gangapurna, Tent Peak, Machhapuchhre, etc. There is a memorial park surrounded with prayer flags to honor and remember the climbers who met their demise during the expedition. You will then climb about 100m higher than the base camp to acclimatize to the surrounding. Overnight.
11

Trek Descant Bamboo (approx walk 6-7 hours)

During sunrise in the morning, the rays illuminate the snow-capped peaks to a glorious golden shimmer. This is the moment from the entire trek that you will closely cherish your entire life. These ever-so-brief moments when you get immersed in nature itself are what you came for. We will take breakfast at Annapurna Base Camp. Be extra cautious while descending, since the melting snow makes the trail slippery. We will stop at Machhapuchhre Base Camp for tea. You will then descend all the way down to Bamboo through the same trail and with the same level of enthusiasm, with occasional photo breaks in between. Overnight at Bamboo.
12

Trek to Jhinu Dhada (Hot Spring) (walk approx 5-6 hours)

We will trek down to Sinuwa and then to Chomrong. Since we made a steep climb while on our journey the last time, the same route is now a steep descent the opposite way. After lunch in Chomrong, we will descend for about an hour to reach Jhinu Dada. The special on the menu for this day is a bath in the natural hot spring near Modi Khola (a 35-minute brisk walk from our hotel.) It is held that numerous skin problems are treated on bathing here. Nevertheless, you will surely be rejuvenated with a warm bath after a long, tiring trek. Overnight at the hotel. This is the final night in the mountains. We will surely celebrate with our trekking crew, a lot of whom we will bid farewell to tomorrow.
